Stop Snoring Surgery

Surgery as an option of snoring cure should be the last resort after all the other stop snoring options has been tried and nothing is able to cure snoring.

Important notices about stop snoring surgeries and operations

  1. Surgery very rarely is a choice for the treatment of sleep apnea, But Continuous Positive Air Way Pressure "CPAP" therapy is the recommended for the treatment of sleep apnea.
  2. Stop snoring surgeries are expensive and are rarely covered by your medical insurance {like cosmetic surgeries}

To see if you can be a candidate for surgery; you should consult a cosmetic surgeon for nasal surgeries or Otorhinolaryngology surgeon for palatal surgery.

Stop snoring surgeries are either nasal or palatal

I-Palatal surgeries / Operations:

The main surgery for snoring and it aims at removing of the loose tissues at the back of the mouth which cause obstruction of the upper air passages {being collapsible} and also as they are loose they tend to vibrate producing the snoring voice
These structures are the Tonsils, the soft palate and the uvula {the tissue that hangs from the middle of the back of the roof of the mouth}.

UvuloPalatoPharyngoplasty "UPPP"

Is the standards surgical operation :Aiming at removal of the soft palate, the uvula and the tonsils, also the adenoids and any redundant tissues will be removed

  • Full diagnostic procedures should be performed before the decision of the surgery to know the exact cause of snoring {palatal, nasal or from the tongue}, A full sleep study is mandatory prior to the operation
  • The operation will cure only about 50% to 75% of cases
  • Until full recovery which will take up to 3 weeks you will have difficulties in swallowing
  • You will experience post operative pain
  • Some times the operation may cause sleep apnea if a scar tissue is formed at the operation site
  • The uvula is important for some languages {not English but in some African and middle-eastern languages as Arabic and in Native American languages}

laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty "LAUP"

Is a modification of the "UPPP" as the LASER is used to cut the uvula with no post operative stay put multiple sessions {2-5 sessions} separated by 1 month each

Radio frequency tissue ablation "Somnoplasty"

With the advantage of less bleeding and scarring a needle electrode emits energy waves to shrink the excess redundant tissues and also requires multiple outpatient sessions

II-Nasal Surgery:

The nasal septum is the thin wall separating the both nasal openings; it should be at the center of the nose but if it is deviated to either side it will cause narrowing of that side; usually it is asymptomatic and don't cause any medical problems but some times this narrowing will lead to nasal obstruction which may be the cause of your snoring
Septoplasty: is the operation aimed at correction of nasal septum deviation.

III- Tongue Surgery:

The tongue suspension operation

Prevents the tongue from falling to the back of the mouth by suturing the base of the tongue with a screw inserted into the lower jaw but with less success rate
